Exclusive: See how Alex Garland and Alicia Vikander brought Ex Machina's A.I. to life

In a world in which franchise tentpoles rule the roost in the sci-fi space, it's always exciting when a more intimate, original film really taps into something and brings fans of the genre a truly compelling cinematic experience. We've seen it before with titles like Moon and Chronicle, and now we have another gem in Alex Garland's Ex Machina, the story of a nascent artificial intelligence created by an eccentric genius. The movie, which is the directorial debut of the guy who wrote Sunshine and 28 Days Later, has been garnering great reviews in its initial, limited release (it currently sits at 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) and is set to expand to a nationwide release on April 24.
