If there’s one true thing that can be said about Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon, it’s that the male leads of The Walking Dead have stuck it out through nine seasons because of mutual beneficence. There’s an inherent disagreement at these companions’ roots — one that infests both ends and means. In the show’s ninth season, these tensions become ever clearer partially because fans know that Rick (and actor Andrew Lincoln) isn’t long for the show. And when he’s gone, who’s going to lead?
In a SYFY WIRE exclusive clip from the upcoming episode "Warning Signs," Daryl and Rick discuss Justin’s death. Daryl knows the question is coming, Rick knows the answer is right behind it. But they still have to discuss it, which leads to a delicious departure of philosophy as the show’s leadership enters flux.
Take a look:
Rick is as idealistic as ever, while Daryl still holds bitterness in his heart after the death of those in their group, like Glenn. The debate about the future, and what human nature has to do with it — despite the world being predominantly dead — runs through this talk between longtime survivors.
Which stance eventually wins out remains to be seen, but with Rick departing soon, it’ll be interesting for fans to see if his way of thinking doesn’t influence Daryl -- especially if tragedy burns it in deep.
The Walking Dead airs its new episode on Sunday, Oct. 21.
