The cast for Syfy’s new series Ascension is coming together, and the network has tapped a fan favorite from Battlestar Galactica to lead the charge.

Tricia Helfer, best known for playing the lovely and mysterious Cylon Six in Ronald D. Moore’s reimagining of Battlestar Galactica, will star in the upcoming series as Viondra Denniger, the chief steward and captain’s wife of the starship Ascension.

The series tells the story of a covert space mission, launched in 1963, sending hundreds of men, women and children on a 100-year journey to populate a new planet. But 50 years into the trip, just as the Ascension nears its point of no return, the murder of a young woman brings up questions about the ship's mission.

Helfer’s character, who will play a key role in the show, sees herself as a major power broker and holds a position of power and privilege. According to Zap2it, she’s described as beautiful, manipulative and dangerous. The character could also be either a hero or villain. Considering her previous experience on BSG, that shouldn’t be a problem.

The series is being written by Philip Levens (Smallville) and is set to premiere in November on Syfy.

Are you glad to see Helfer heading back to the network, and genre, that made her famous?
