The Darth Vader comic series from writer Kieron Gillen was a lot of fun, and one of the best things about it was the new character Doctor Aphra. Fans clamored for more when Vader ended, and now Marvel has responded.
The comic publisher has announced a new ongoing series called Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, which will follow the character who stole every panel she popped up in during Darth Vader. Gillen will be sticking around for the further adventures of Doctor Aphra (which is awesome). This is significant because it marks the first ongoing Star Wars series focused on an original character introduced in the comics (in the new continuity). It’s a big step for Marvel’s Star Wars comic strategy, and shows the studio is nimble enough to branch into new areas as fan interest shores up.
“What I wanted to do was show what makes Aphra tick,” Gillen told StarWars.com. “That’s the work I feel I’ve got to do with the character, and that kind of push and pull she has between the stuff she does, which is good and bad”.
According to Marvel, the series will follow Aphra following her escape from Vader. With the droids 0-0-0 and BT-1 by her side, Aphra sets off in search of rare artifacts from across the galaxy (while also hiding out from Vader). It’ll be a straight-up adventure series, following Aphra’s archaeological missions while also keeping her a step ahead of the Empire while on the run.
The first issue of Star Wars: Doctor Aphra is slated to hit comic store shelves in December.
