Fandom Files #1: These Star Wars fans are using lightsabers to help sick children

Mar 26, 2021, 5:00 PM EDT (Updated)

Welcome to SYFY WIRE's brand new podcast, The Fandom Files!

The Fandom Files is an exploration of different fandoms, featuring conversations with hardcore geeks and members of fan communities, to discuss their nerd origin stories and the inner workings of their chosen worlds.

SYFY is all about fandom, celebrating the love of genre entertainment and the people who obsess over it most. This podcast will move the focus from the people who speak at Comic-Con to the people that attend, telling the incredible stories of dedication and love in the fan community.

The hosts are SYFY WIRE Features Editor Jordan Zakarin and Newsweek pop culture reporter Emily Gaudette. The guests? Could be you!

In our first episode, we speak with Star Wars super-fans who are using their fandom for good. Rubin Polizzi and Amy Chrzanowski are the local president and PR director of the Empire Saber Guild, respectively. The Empire Saber Guild teaches and performs lightsaber choreography, and performs it for charities and local children's hospitals. Yes, they are very, very good people.

On the show, we discussed the right way to fight with lightsabers (note: don't stab people in necks), amazing Carrie Fisher stories, fan fiction you write about yourself, and watching The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi trailers at Hooters.
