As the old Hollywood saying goes, "well, we guess somebody liked it!" After a widely panned first season and a much improved second season, Iron Fist became the first of the Marvel Netflix shows to get the axe. No amount of punching will save it now — but wouldn't you know it? A fan petition has sprung up to try and save the Immortal Danny Rand. We guess his Chi touched more lives than most people had thought.
The petition can be found at Change.org, and as of this writing it is over 20,000 signatures and climbing. Their entire goal is only 25,000. The petition called "Bring Back Iron Fist" claims that Netflix "has made a terrible decision" with canceling the show, that there are "many fans of the character and the series and most people said that the second season was excellent," and also that "it's unfair that Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Daredevil get a third season and their shows get mixed reviews too yet Iron Fist gets the shaft." They go on to talk about the potential of the series, as well as the major cliffhanger that fans of the show were left with.
Fan petitions are not uncommon these days (especially when a genre related show gets canceled) but this one is unusual, mostly because the prevailing thought was that everyone disliked this show. It would seem that at least 20,000 people (and counting) liked it enough to sign an online petition.
The endeavor has gone so far as to receive notice from the showrunner of the show's second season, M. Raven Metzner. When a fan tweeted that the petition was reaching 15k (which it has since surpassed) and asked if there was any chance to save it, Metzner tweeted a response back, writing, "I'm humbled by the fact that so many people have signed this petition to #saveironfist — so glad so many people enjoyed it."
Who knows what the future may hold for Danny Rand and company? Just because Iron Fist is not coming back (unless this petition really catches fire, and even then, hmm), it doesn't exactly mean that we've seen the last of the characters from the show or that the cliffhanger won't be resolved. If you ask us (for the record, nobody has) we'd put Jessica Henwick's Colleen Wing together with Simone Missick's Misty Knight for a Daughters of the Dragon series. We'd do this immediately.
Danny can always pop up to annoy Luke Cage over on his series (or annoy and then get punched by Jessica Jones on hers), and this could go so far as to possibly even segue into a Heroes for Hire event.
There's just so much leftover Chi all over the streets of New York — Netflix and Marvel are bound to do something with it. Over 20,000 fans (and one showrunner) are hoping that they do.
