The new trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald gave us only the briefest glimpse at Johnny Depp’s portrayal of dark wizard (and titular criminal) Gellert Grindelwald, but thanks to a newly announced LEGO set, we’ve got a few clues about how his character’s storyline begins.
The trailer sees Grindelwald seated in a Thestral-drawn carriage with at least two wands (wielded by off-screen wizards and/or witches) pointed at his throat. A criminal transport if we've ever seen one. But, as has been previously noted, the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them begins when Grindelwald escapes the captivity the first film earned him.
Take a look at this LEGO set, called “Grindelwald’s Escape,” and see if you can figure out how he may have found his freedom:
That’s Grindelwald and a Thestral, yes, but it’s also President of MACUSA Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo) in a dashing outfit that looks like the blue uniform of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.
She, along with the villainous wizard, have magical blasts in hand along with their wands, likely indicating that the escape comes after Grindelwald fights Picquery (and possibly others) to escape from this carriage. The vehicle’s removable roof is either a hint at how Grindelwald springs his cage, or simply a way to see where the wizard was being held en route to... wherever they were taking him.
What he’s up to after his escape is still unknown, but how he escaped and from whom seems clearer and clearer.
The 132-piece set, which is priced at $19.99, will be available Aug. 1 — more than a month before the sequel’s premiere date of Nov. 16. Plenty of time to get your LEGO-assisted fan theories rolling.
