Fantastic Feasts: Niffler Pops

For anyone and everyone who was a fan of Harry Potter (and still is, because let’s be honest, nobody outgrows Harry Potter), the upcoming feature film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is an event worth counting down for!  To celebrate properly, we’ve thrown open our pantry, flipped through our own book of spells, fired up the oven, and decided to make our own sweet treat, “Niffler Pops.”

But just what exactly is a Niffler?  According to Pottermore:

The Niffler is a British beast. Fluffy, black and long-snouted, this burrowing creature has a predilection for anything glittery. Nifflers are often kept by goblins to burrow deep into the earth for treasure. Though the Niffler is gentle and even affectionate, it can be destructive to belongings and should never be kept in a house. Nifflers live in lairs up to twenty feet below the surface and produce six to eight young in a litter.

While an actual Niffler might steal away your keys and jewelry, we can guarantee the only thing our Niffler pops will steal is your heart…and your hunger if you eat enough of them. 


For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 box cake mix (we used cherry because…yum!) or an already prepared and un-iced cake.
  • 1 can frosting (again we used cherry)
  • 1 bag black candy melts
  • 1 bag pink candy melts
  • Black food coloring
  • 1 bag of Hershey Kisses (unwrapped)
  • ½ bag shredded coconut
  • Coconut oil (or shortening)


You will also need:

  • A large bowl
  • 2 small microwave safe bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Tin Foil
  • Parchment paper
  • 1 chopstick
  • Wooden mixing spoon
  • Cake pop sticks
  • Ziploc bag


If you don’t already have an un-iced cake prepared, start by preparing your cake according to the directions on the box.  Bake it up exactly as directed and allow it to cool.

While your cake is cooling, take your shredded coconut and place it into your Ziploc bag.  Add in a few drops of your black food coloring and knead the bag to evenly distribute it through your coconut. 

Once your coconut has achieved a uniform color, spread it out evenly on a baking sheet lined with tin foil.

Place your coconut into a 350F/176C oven and toast for 12 minutes, stirring every 4 minutes to ensure even toasting.  Allow your coconut to cool.


Take your baked cake and crumble it up in your large bowl. 

Feel free to use your hands for this part. 


You want your crumbs to be fairly small and uniform.  Make sure to break up any large clumps.

Once your cake is crumbled, scoop in half of the container of frosting…and only half!  Too much and your cake pops will be soggy. 


Using your wooden spoon, mix in the frosting until you are left with a thick cake paste.


Roll your cake paste into small balls about the size of a ping-pong ball and place them onto a parchment paper lined baking sheet.  Don't worry if they're not perfectly round...Niffler's aren't either.  :)

Chill your cake balls in the freezer for at least 15 minutes.

While your cake balls are chilling, take your pink candy melts and place them into your microwave safe bowl.  Microwave them for 15-second bursts, stirring between each session, until they are fully melted.

Take your cake balls out of the freezer. 


One at a time, dip the end of your cake pop sticks into your melted pink candy melt and gently place them into the center of each of your chilled cake balls.


Then, using a bit of pink candy melt as glue, attach a single unwrapped Hershey Kiss to the side of each of your cake balls. 

These will become your Niffler’s face and nose.

I've noticed all Hershey Kisses have a slight tilt to their tips.  I like having the tips point up like your Niffler is looking up at you...of course, it's up to you how you want to position them...


Once you’ve placed sticks in all your cake balls and given them all Hershey Kiss noses, return them to the freezer again for another 15 minutes to firm up.

Once they’ve again firmed up in the freezer, it’s time to dip your Nifflers in pink!

Hold your cake pops by their sticks and gently dip them into your melted pink candy melts (feel free to re-zap your melts in the microwave if they’ve hardened up, making sure to just do it for 15 seconds at a time and stirring between each zap). 

Pro tip:  If you find your candy melt is too thick to properly dip, you can add in coconut oil or shortening (one teaspoon at a time) to help thin it out.  Don’t add too much or it will be too soft to properly set up at the end, but just enough to make it thinner and more manageable.


You want to make sure you have an even coat but don’t want your candy melt to be too thick on your pops.  Resist the urge to double dip...they'll come out too pink.

Once you have an even dip, gently tap or twirl your cake pop over your candy melt to remove the excess candy melt.

Place your now pink dipped pops onto their parchment lined baking tray and return to the freezer for another 15 minutes.

While they’re chilling, it’s time to melt your black candy melts.  Using the same method as we did for the pink, place the black candy melts into a microwave safe bowl and zap them for 15 second increments, stirring between zaps, until they’re fully melted.

Carefully dip just the back end of your Niffler pop into your black candy melt, stopping just before you get to the Hershey Kiss.  You can also use a spoon to help drizzle your black candy melt over the back of your Niffler pop.


Immediately sprinkle the now black back end of your Niffler pop with your toasted and dyed black shredded coconut and place it back onto your parchment lined baking sheet.   

Now that your Niffler has fur, let’s give it some eyes and a nose! 


Using the small end of your chopstick, gently dip it into the black melted candy melts and dot on two small eyes and two small nostrils at the tip of your Hershey Kiss.

Return your now completed Nifflers to their parchment lined baking sheet and pop them back into the freezer for their final 15-minute cool down.

Once they’re fully cooled down, feel free to serve them as they are, individually wrap them in small bags with little ribbons to give away, or do what I did and immediately eat a few!

Either way, enjoy your magical (and adorable) Niffler Pops!
