Though Batman typically gets top billing, his home turf has arguably evolved into a character in and of itself over the decades. Heck, just ask Fox — they built an entire TV series around the crazy characters who inhabit the city before Bats even grows up.

So how has Gotham City evolved over the past 70 or so years? This fascinating video essay aims to answer that question, including excerpts that range from modern-day video games and films to the ZAP! and POW! of the 1960s Batman series. Though the city has obviously grown to become a facsimile of New York in a lot of ways, Gotham at its heart is so much more.

It’s been imagined and reimagined in myriad styles, and to actually sit down and see all those contrasting adaptations hacked together just goes to show how iconic this DC city has become to pop culture as a whole. It’s dark, damned and deco — but also hopeful in some ways. Much like Batman himself. If nothing else, this shines a light on the ways Gotham is often a reflection of the hero who calls it home.
