One of the weirdest and funniest comics Image has ever produced just scored some major talent for its animated adaptation.
Back in 2009, Image Comics debuted a very strange detective series, Chew, about a parellel world where a mysterious avian flu caused chicken everywhere to be outlawed, leaving the FDA as the primary law of the land. There's black market poultry, Russian assassins, cyborgs and vampires, and smack dab in the middle is FDA agent Tony Chu, a man with a very strange talent -- he is a cibopath.
Translation: He can tell you the history of something by eating it.
This leads Tony on a hilariously bizarre journey in which he literally eats the dead in order to discover increasingly convoluted truths. It's wacky and weird, but it works
The idea is strong enough that an animated series is being crafted by the comic's creators, John Layman and Rob Guillory, along with Scott Boxenbaum. And that series just got a huge shot in the arm by grabbing two great actors -- The Walking Dead's Steven Yeun, and star/creator of every nerdy thing you've ever seen on the Internet, Felicia Day.
Yeun will be playing Tony, while Felicia will be taking on his love interest, Amelia Mintz, who, surprise, has a superpower of her very own. She's a saboscrivner, which is a fancy way of saying "whatever she writes about food, you will experience." Mintz, naturally, is a food critic.
This is exciting news, especially since Chew has been bounced around a bit since the cartoon was announced back in 2010. Hopefully, adding such cool talent to the mix will ground the project and get things really moving.
