Fresh off the series premiere for new space opera The Expanse, Syfy has gone ahead and dropped the first four episodes online for your viewing pleasure.

The network (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed) aired the first two episodes earlier this week to solid critical reception, and to help keep the buzz rolling, has released the first four episodes to create the perfect storm for a holiday mini-binge watch. The episodes are available at Syfy.com, as well as on demand cable, satellite and telco platforms. The early release episodes are scheduled to air December 22 and 29.

The pilot episode was also released online a few weeks before the television premiere, and was sampled 4.4 million times during the window from November 23 until December 14. The series is set 200 years and the future, and weaves a complex tale of political drama as a cold war is brewing between different factions across the solar system. The show is based on the book series by  James S. A. Corey (aka Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck).

Said Sara Moscowitz, Senior Vice President, Brand and Strategic Marketing, Syfy:  “By giving viewers the opportunity to watch Episodes 3 and 4 early, we’re not only providing a little holiday gift for the series’ existing fans, but we’re also allowing new viewers who’ve heard about THE EXPANSE to catch up on the series,” Sara Moscowitz, Senior Vice President, Brand and Strategic Marketing at Syfy, said. “With the potential to hook a broad audience over the holidays, we hope to debut Episode 5 to a committed, passionate fan base on January 5.”

The live airing of The Expanse’s premiere reportedly garnered a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 1.19 million viewers (slightly above what Defiance was pulling in the timeslot), though it’ll be interesting to see just how much of a lift those numbers receive once Live +7 data from DVR viewing is factored in. Not to mention the potential impact of the online premiere. If anything, it may take well into 2016 — once the live episodes catch up and exclusively debut on TV — to get a real feel for the total viewership. Welcome to the future of TV ratings, y’all.

The Expanse airs regularly on Syfy on Tuesday nights.
