We didn’t think anything could rival Telltale Games’ acclaimed The Walking Dead videogame, but this new project just might be able to give it a run for its money.
Overkill, the Starbreeze AB developer that created the acclaimed videogame franchise Payday, has announced an agreement with Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment to develop a new Walking Dead first-person shooter co-op game set in Kirkman’s little corner of the zombie apocalypse.
The game will apparently explore new characters and storylines, much as Telltale’s episodic series has told its own self-contained stories largely separate from the comics and television series. The tantalizing tagline: “In 2016, Washington will fall. What will you do?”
Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson Klint had some big talk about the project when making the announcement:
"The collaboration between Starbreeze Studios and our partner Skybound Interactive will deliver something uniquely exciting for our millions of fans. We're two independents joining forces to create the ultimate survival horror game. With Robert on the team, we will bring The Walking Dead into the world of first-person shooter co-op games. It will be gameplay focused, ferocious and bring chaos to the traditional industry model – from us developers straight to you. This time it's big – don't walk alone."
Though it doesn’t show off much footage, the developer released an announcement video for the game, complete with a video endorsement from Kirkman himself:
