Your favorite purple video game dragon is making a comeback in an HD remake of his original three games, which were released on the first PlayStation console back in the late '90s. Today, Sony and Activision released a trailer for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which makes Spyro the Dragon (1998), Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999), and Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000) look as if they were just released last week.
Putting the original pixelated gameplay footage next to the new and improved remastered footage shows quite the staggering difference and should certainly be enough for longtime fans of the game to put this re-release on their respective video game wish lists.
"We're deeply passionate about staying true to the legacy of the original three Spyro games with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy,” said Paul Yan, chief creative officer at Toys for Bob. “We've poured a lot of love into making the personalities and worlds feel just like fans remember them, while also keeping the game collection surprisingly fresh with lush, high-definition detail. We're bringing back the Spyro we all fell in love with 20 years ago."

"The remasters are a love letter to the fans, and we see this as an opportunity to re-create and bring to life the memory they have of this game from when they were a kid," Toys for Bob's Joshua Nadelberg said in an interview with IGN. Nadelberg and Paul Yan were the developers in charge of the HD re-release. While Insomniac Games (the original developer of the series) was not directly involved, the two heads of the project ran their new artwork by the folks at Insomniac to make sure they were staying true to the original spirit of the games. They also sought advice from the team that remastered the Crash Bandicoot titles. The place where Yan and Nadelberg first started developing was Toasty's level, hoping that if they could just recapture "that tone, then that set it up for the rest of the game."
Spyro Reignited Trilogy arrives this September for purchase on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at $39.99 a pop. Renowned voice actor Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) reprises his role as Spyro, whom he voiced in Ripto's Rage! and Year of the Dragon.
