After dozens of beautiful, artsy teasers that don't offer a bit of info on the upcoming season, the first trailer -- with actual episode footage -- from American Horror Story: Apocalypse has finally arrived, with time to spare before next week's big season premiere.
Within the new trailer, we get our first glimpse of Joan Collins, making her AHS debut. We also get a peek at Jessica Lange, back for the first time in five seasons; Dylan McDermott, making his first appearance on the show since Season 1; and the Rubber Man from Murder House.
Granted, we get very little info in the new preview about the apocalypse, or what causes it. The mushroom cloud suggests a bomb -- likely nuclear, judging by the hazmat suit. What is interesting is the fact that the apocalypse does not seem to be the focus of this season -- or, at least, this trailer. The trailer is really hyping the Murder House/Coven crossover.
Also interesting: There is a different look to this season. Murder House, Season 1, had a very sparse, washed-out color palette, while Coven, Season 3, was shockingly white, punctuated with black dresses. Apocalypse has a dim, yellowish palette, one that you might see in a candlelit bunker. So at least that part fits with the theme.
No details are known about the plot of Apocalypse, other than that it is set in the not-too-distant future and the apocalypse takes place in the first episode. Series stalwart Sarah Paulson will reprise her roles as Billie Dean (from Murder House) and Cordelia (from Coven), as well as playing an entirely new character. She will also direct her first episode of the show. Others returning to the cast include Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Taissa Farmiga, and Connie Britton.
American Horror Story: Apocalypse airs Sept. 12 on FX.
