First footage from live action Futurama fan film is so weird, but so perfect

What happens when you try to translate an animated classic into live action? It can get … weird. 

Not content to let Futurama drift into quiet purgatory, a team of ambitious fans are putting together a full-fledged, live-action fan film. Considering this is a show about a cyclops, robot and giant lobster man — we’re talking about a pretty ambitious effort. But, low budget aside, FAN-O-RAMA: A Futurama Fan Film looks pretty great. Extremely weird, and partially like geek-tastic nightmare fuel, but good.

The fan film hasn’t been released yet (and we don’t really know anything about the plot, either), but the trailer does show off several main characters and some nods to Matt Groening’s series that fans are certain to catch. They even managed to bring the main exterior sets to life via (what seems to be) model work of the Planet Express building and trademark spaceship.

But, yeah, the whole thing still looks really weird.
