The world just got its first look at the young Billy Batson in the upcoming DC comic book movie Shazam!
Last week, we got our first official look at the titular hero, played by Chuck's Zachary Levi, who's sporting quite the Golden Age vibe. But we haven't heard much about Batson, Shazam!'s teenage alter ego.
Not until earlier today, when Entertainment Weekly released the first official image of the young hero, as played by actor Asher Angel. Batson's on the left in the pic below, his buddy Freddy Freeman, played by Jack Dylan Grazer, is on the right.
In the comics, Batson is a misunderstood foster kid who encounters a wizard who grants him the ability to become a fully-grown superhero simply by uttering his namesake, Shazam! Onscreen, Guardians of the Galaxy's Djimon Hounsou will play the millennia-old wizard.
From the look of things so far, director David F. Sandberg is trying to capture the spirit of the Golden Age comics to make a lighthearted superhero epic. Particularly the wide-eyed innocence of Levi's Shazam!, who really does come across like a kid thoroughly enjoying his own costumed antics.
Unfortunately, the long-rumored appearance of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Shazam! nemesis Black Adam looks like it won't be happening after all. Though that could be the Skyscraper star being coy, given that he's still committed to portraying the character on the big screen.
Now that we've been treated to a handful of official images, there is a definite expectation that we'll be seeing some actual footage (possibly even a teaser trailer) at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. We'll certainly keep you posted if that happens.
Either way, Shazam! will hit theaters nationwide April 5, 2019.
