Acclaimed comic creator Garth Ennis has lined up his next project, and the man behind the Preacher is returning to the world of horror with A Walk Through Hell. We have a first look at the terrifying new Aftershock comic series below.

The series will be written by Ennis with art by Goran Sudžuka, and follows FBI agents Shaw and McGregor, who are looking into the mysterious disappearance of two fellow agents. But their search takes a horrifying turn, and the agents wind up stumbling into an all-out nightmare inside a Long Beach warehouse. Ennis teases that the series will delve into psychological horror, as Shaw and MGregor are haunted by manifestations of a previous case. The project is described as a “new kind of horror story for modern America,” with the first issue hitting shelves on May 16.

“It’s been quite a while since I last did a horror book -- Caliban was partly science fiction, so really the last flat-out horror story I started would have been Crossed in 2008,” Ennis said in a statement. “That came partly from my reaction to the Bush era, revolving as it did around themes of chaos and abandonment. A Walk Through Hell is more of a response to the current administration, involving corruption and wrongdoing, and the bubbling up of an evil long held in check. All in all, I decided it was time for another gaze into the dark.”

Sudžuka said Ennis has proven to be an excellent collaborator on the series, adding the art is a reflection of a more terrifying approach that avoids the typical “spectacular explosions and massive fistfights” common in the medium.
