First look at Spider-Men II, where we'll meet the other Miles Morales

Brian Michael Bendis wrapped up the first Spider-Men comic event with one heck of a cliffhanger. Five years later, he’s finally getting ready to wrap it up.

Marvel Comics has dropped the first preview pages from Spider-Men II, and it’s crazy to think how much has changed since the original event series. Back then, Miles was still in the Ultimate Universe, and the crossover allowed him to meet Earth-616’s “original” version of Peter Parker. Fast-forward five years and one Secret War later, and now Miles is part of Marvel’s Prime universe and kicking around with the Champions (following a stint with the Avengers). There’s also the fact that there’s no more Ultimate Universe. So how, exactly, does a Spider-Men II work?

That’s what we’re dying to find out. For what it’s worth, Bendis said he plans to pay off the cliffhanger from Spider-Men, which ended with Peter Parker doing a web search for Miles Morales once he returned to Earth-616. The event ended with Peter’s jaw hitting the floor after seeing, well, something. Which means there was/is a “prime” version of Miles who existed/exists.

Here’s an excerpt from what Bendis had to say about the long-awaited payoff:

“[S]ometimes I think that everyone knows that sometimes the thing you worry about the most with sequels, is that it’s just going to be the same story over and over again, whereas this one already the premise is completely different because now Miles and Peter are living in the same universe, their legacy is of the same cloth and it alters everything between them. Plus, we still don’t know who Miles Morales was in the 616 before our Miles got there, so we have a very interesting bunch of things to reveal…

There is a person Miles Morales and we’re gonna meet him and it’s a story to tell. So, it’s a very important story to us and we’ve been planning it for years and we wanted to make sure it was the right time and the right people to do it so I just want to make it clear since I’ve been so goofy about the answer that you’re getting a real answer, a serious answer, not a fake out.”

There’s certainly a lot to unpack here. At the end of Secret Wars, Miles is one of the few survivors from the Ultimate Universe, incorporated into the new Prime universe after giving Molecule Man an old burger as a gift. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he replaced whatever other version of Miles might have already existed on Earth-616, which means there could now be two versions of Miles out there.

Spider-Men II arrives in July.
