They took their sweet time, but Hot Rod is (finally!) about to make his debut in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Fans have been waiting for the beloved Autobot to appear in director Michael Bay's Transformers movies since the first one opened in 2007. The awesome news was announced via an official tweet, which also gives us a first look at the character.

Hot Rod is a brash, headstrong, impetuous, over-confident and sometimes arrogant young Autobot who ultimately became the new Autobot leader, Rodimus Prime, when Optimus Prime was killed (don't worry, he came back) in 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie (I will admit this movie made me bawl like a little baby, darnit). Hot Rod was reformatted when he managed to get his hands on the Autobot Matrix of Leadership.

So, what will that mean for The Last Knight? Are they setting up Hot Rod to take on the mantle of Autobot leader at one point in the movie franchise? Food for thought. Have a look:

Hot Rod will be joined by a returning Bumblebee, who will get a brand-new look, and the totally adorable new Autobot, Squeeks. On the Decepticon side, the fifth Transformers film (and the first to be coming out of the new Writer's Room) will see the return of their leader Megatron, and the debut of the recently announced Combaticon leader, Onslaught. Pretty sweet, eh?

Opening on June 23, 2017, Transformers: The Last Knight stars Mark Wahlberg, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Laura Haddock, Santiego Cabrera, Ken Watanabe, Mitch Pileggi, Isabela Moner and Jerrod Carmichael.

Are you thrilled to see Hot Rod make his first appearance in the Transformers Cinematic Universe? What do you think of the character design?
