The Mad Hatter is finally coming to Gotham in Season 3, and we have our first look at Walking Dead actor Benedict Samuel in the role of the Batman villain. In case you're wondering, Samuel played the Alpha Wolf (the one with the bad teeth) in Season 6 of the zombie drama series.
In the pages of DC Comics, the Mad Hatter was a non-powered (meaning he has no superpowers) scientist named Jervis Tetch who created and used special mind-control devices on his victims, but even though the Mad Hatter is a genius, he’s also mentally ill. Sporting an oversized green hat where the supervillain kept said devices, he was based on the Hatter from Lewis Carroll's Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The character first appeared in the pages of Batman #49 back in 1948.
As you can see in the image below, Samuel is not sporting the oversized green hat (and coat), and he looks much more like a gentleman dandy than the DC Comics character. He's also a hypnotist rather than a scientist. Here's an official description of the character via Entertainment Weekly:
“A talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness. He arrives in Gotham with an unwavering desire to find his sister, Alice, a young woman who went missing in the city years ago. It is anyone’s guess just how far down the rabbit hole he’s willing to go in order to find her.”
Benedict Samuel will recur in Season 3, and his first appearance in the pre-Batman Fox series will be in Episode 3. Gotham is set to premiere on Sept. 19 on Fox.
