TV loves a mystery. Or, more accurately, television viewers love a mystery because they want to be the first ones to solve the puzzle. Over a decade ago, Lost became a cultural phenomenon because it combined the mystery with compelling characters and stories. Regardless of the way fans reacted to the ending, Lost was still a breakout hit. Now, eight years after Lost wrapped up, NBC’s Manifest appears to be chasing some of the mysterious elements that made Lost a fan favorite.
In the first trailer for Manifest, we meet several of the main characters, including Athena Karkanis and Josh Dallas as Grace and Ben Stone. Grace and Ben are siblings who take a fateful trip on Montego Air Flight 828, but a few of their family members are forced to miss the flight. But when the Grace and Ben finally arrive at their destination, they discover that over five years have passed.
Back to the Future director Robert Zemeckis is executive-producing Manifest, which was created by Jeff Rake and Matthew Fernandes. The first half of the trailer sets up the Stone family drama as they discover that they lost one of their parents during their missing half-decade. However, the time jump may have also saved the life of Ben’s son, whose seemingly incurable disease may finally have a treatment.
Of course, this wouldn’t be a genre show if there was just one twist. Both Grace and Ben are hearing voices, which may lead them to a new destiny far beyond their ordinary lives. Judging by the closing moments of the trailer, they aren’t the only survivors of the plane who feel drawn together by an unseen force. From there, the mystery of Manifest will unfold on Monday nights this fall on NBC.
