Marvel has unveiled our first official look at Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of Dr. Stephen Strange in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie.
The official image has been revealed in the pages of Entertainment Weekly’s First Look issue. This is the first time we've seen the Sherlock star wearing the Sorcerer Supreme’s iconic garb. As you can see, the actor sports Stephen Strange’s signature goatee, blue robe and red cowl, as well as the Eye of Agamotto! I only wish we had a closer look at the mystical amulet, because from where I stand, it looks pretty darn cool. I don't know about you, but I really love how the costume looks faithful to what the character wears in the pages of Marvel Comics, but also fits nicely into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The magazine shoot reveals it’s actually one of the first times the actor has tried on the costume of the brilliant, self-centered surgeon who, following a car accident that cripples his hands, becomes a powerful sorcerer bent on protecting the Earth. Cumberbatch says he used the photo shoot as a mini-research session to hone the physical motions his character will use in spell-casting.
“I’m still in the infancy of learning all that,” Cumberbatch tells EW. “It was like, okay, I’ve got to keep throwing these poses, these spells, these rune-casting things, everything he does physically. I’m thinking, there’s going to be a huge amount of speculation and intrigue over the positioning of that finger as opposed to it being there, or there. And I’m still working on that. We haven’t played any of those scenes yet. I felt really self-conscious. But, then, by the end, it was great. It’s like anything, you just have to experiment.”
The actor also added, “There’s going to be crazy s— going on.”
EW has also released a few more pics and cool concept images of Cumberbatch and the Sorcerer Supreme’s very own Sanctum Sanctorum. Check them out in the gallery below.
Directed by Scott Derrickson, principal photography on Doctor Strange began this past November and won’t wrap until March. Also starring Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mads Mikkelsen, it is set to open in theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.
