A first-season character is making a surprising return to Gotham

One of Gotham's major first-season villains is coming back to town.

According to The Wrap, Jada Pinkett Smith will return as Fish Mooney for several upcoming episodes in Season 2. She will appear in what Fox described as a "multi-episode arc" during the season's back half. No other details about her return have been made available yet.

Mooney, an original character created for the series when it launched, was a powerful crime boss who was eventually usurped by the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and thrown to her presumed death in a river at the end of Season 1. But this is of course the world of comic books, so no one ever really dies or stays dead (with occasional exceptions).

Smith actually announced toward the end of the first season that she had signed just a one-year deal and would not be coming back. But either that was a clever Mooney-style ruse or the producers made her an offer that, in classic criminal tradition, she couldn't refuse.

She'll be joining a crowded season that, in addition to regular villains Penguin and Riddler, will also be introducing Mr. Freeze and Dr. Hugo Strange before the dust settles. Good times!

Don't know about you, but after a "meh" first season, I've been enjoying Gotham's second turn at bat. The show is certifiably nuts, but it has fully embraced its insanity in this second set of shows. And as a result, it has been more fun and unpredictable than some of the other superhero series on the schedule. IMHO anyway.

Are you enjoying Gotham this season? Are you even still watching? And what are your thoughts on the return of Fish Mooney?
