How's this for chilling? Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa unveiled via Twitter the first concept art for his highly anticipated Sabrina spinoff, which is expected to premiere on Netflix next year.
And by the look of it, everybody's favorite teenage witch will be casting a fiery spell on television viewers.
The illustration shows Sabrina approaching a clearing where a fire burns unabated at the center of a gothic-style darkened wood – giving the pending show a much more foreboding tone than fans of the young, blonde enchantress are probably used to.
Earlier this month, Netflix ordered a straight-to-series live-action adaptation of the comic book Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which Aguirre-Sacasa wrote for Archie Horror. The latter is an imprint of Archie Comics, whose classic characters inhabit the showrunner's hit CW series Riverdale.
Filming on the two-season, 20-episode run is slated to get underway in February and wrap in October. The streaming service has yet to announce an air date, but given that Netflix owns streaming rights to Riverdale, we wouldn't rule out some crossover potential between the two shows.
The still-untitled series is expected to be a more grown-up take on Sabrina Spellman, whose magical adventures were previously depicted over the decades in various cartoons as well as in the popular ABC and later WB sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, which starred Melissa Joan Hart and ran from 1996 to 2003.
