First teaser trailer for CBS's Star Trek series, full trailer for MacGyver reboot

We finally have our first peek at CBS’s new Star Trek series, plus the network’s reboot of 1980s classic spy-fi series MacGyver.

The network is playing things extremely close to the vest with Star Trek, and didn’t actually show off any footage from the eagerly anticipated new series. Instead, CBS’s recent up-front presentation for next season brought a brief teaser clip, which featured a CGI fly-by of some alien worlds, as well as the nifty new Star Trek logo.

Though it doesn’t include much intel, the promo did feature the tagline “New Crews, New Villains, New Heroes, New Worlds,” which seems to indicate Bryan Fuller’s new series will most definitely not be focused (at least not solely) on the crew of an Enterprise ship. Instead, it sounds like they’re cooking up something bigger that can just play and have fun in this universe (akin to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., maybe, but hopefully better?).

Along with the Star Trek reveal, the network also showed off the first footage from MacGyver, starring Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class) as the 20-something whiz kid who can stop a nuclear bomb with nothing but bubble gum and a paper clip. Weirdly enough, the trailer feels a whole lot like USA’s Burn Notice (in a good-ish way!), which itself was a fairly obvious riff on the original MacGyver series. What goes around, as they say.

Though it’s certainly not genre, CBS’s first trailer for new sitcom The Great Indoors might be of some interest to sci-fi fans, since it features Community fan favorite Joel McHale in a starring role. But, instead of kicking around alternate realities at community college, McHale now plays the manly editor of a travel magazine forced to manage a team of millennials. Honestly, the trailer doesn’t look fantastic, but McHale’s boundless charisma could still make this a fun one.
