For the first time in 53 years, Marvel Comics is introducing a new Wasp

With the new Marvel Comics universe officially established in the wake of Secret Wars, the publisher is gearing up for its next big event — Secret Wars. Err, again.

Marvel is planning to launch Civil War II later this year, with its own unique spin on the All New, All Different universe. That’s fairly interesting by itself, but it seems we’ll also be getting a new Wasp for the first time in history as part of the package. Marvel plans to offer a sneak peek at Civil War II on Free Comic Book Day, and that ‘book will also introduce the new Wasp, who will not be Janet Van Dyne (for the first time ever). The FCBD piece is being billed as a “snapshot” from the larger Civil War II arc.

Little is known about the new Wasp, aside from the fact she/he is described as a “mysterious new character.” Marvel teases that the character could be friend or foe, and the new direction for Wasp 2.0 might surprise us (here’s hoping, at least).

“Free Comic Book Day this year is the perfect chance to dive headlong into the Marvel Universe,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “Not only will you get a lead in to the escalating conflict of Civil War II, but you’ll also be introduced to a big new character with the All-New Wasp. Oh, and did we mention this is just one of our Free Comic Book Day offerings? Make sure you support your local retailers and head to a comic shop that weekend to get your hands on these!”

It’s crazy to think that, as much as Marvel likes to pass mantles around, we’ve made it more than 50 years without someone else taking up the Wasp’s role. So who is it? It could be anyone, but if Marvel is wanting to keep things cozy with the MCU, it stands to reason Hope Van Dyne could be a leading candidate. Hey, that’d be some nice synergy before Ant-Man and the Wasp hits the big screen, no?
