A hero returns in first trailer for The CW's Black Lightning

The CW has dropped the first trailer for the new DC Comics series Black Lightning, and — not surprisingly — it looks pretty great.

The series focuses on a retired hero who returns to the streets to protect his daughters, and the first trailer does a good job of setting the stakes. More than any other CW super-show, this one really does look to tell a street-level story. Black LIghtning is fighting against gang violence, and this looks to be a "smaller" story, in a good way. The action looks great, though the bright blue bolt on his suit is a bit hokey. Hopefully it'll be a bit more polished in final execution.

Here's the official synopsis:

Jefferson Pierce is a man wrestling with a secret. Nine years ago, Pierce was gifted with the superhuman power to harness and control electricity, which he used to keep his hometown streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. However, after too many nights with his life and his family on the line, he left his Super Hero days behind. Almost a decade later, Pierce’s crime-fighting days are long behind him…or so he thought. But with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, Black Lightning returns — to save not only his family, but also the soul of his community.

The show is set to premiere in the midseason, possibly early 2018.
