After plenty of speculation, Netflix finally dropped the trailer for the Season 5 preimere episode of Black Mirror, Bandersnatch, which looks to be the show's first interactive offering. If this isn't true, however, it will be the show's first feature-length film. While not technically Season 4, Bandersnatch also doesn't seem like the kick-off of Season 5, causing us to conclude that it's a special and standalone holiday release.
Fondly reminding us of Ready Player One and The Matrix, Bandersnatch takes place in London (circa 1984) and follows a young programmer (Dunkirk's Fionn Whitehead) embarking on a quest to adapt a fantasy novel in a video game. Things get complicated when he begins to question his own reality.
You can check out the trailer below. The music choice of "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood will give anyone some serious Zoolander flashbacks.
While there is no confirmation on whether or not this will be the first interactive episode of Black Mirror, there are some good signs. For one, the '80s-era setting is ripe for such a format as the decade is known as the heyday of Choose Your Own Adventure novels. For another, the trailer itself contains scenes whose "yes or no" outcomes lend themselves well to audience-based decisions. At 34 seconds, our main character flushes some pills down the toilet, a shot that is just screaming for input from those watching at home.
Co-starring Asim Chaudhry, Will Poulter, and Alice Lowe, Bandersnatch arrives on Netflix tomorrow, Dec. 28. Hannibal and American Gods producer, David Slade, directed the film.
