Mary Shelley’s classic story about man playing god is coming back to the big screen, and it has a few genre fan favorites along for the ride.

This new retelling of Frankenstein, dubbed Victor Frankenstein, plays like a sci-fi/steampunk spin on Guy Ritchie’s successful Sherlock Holmes series. Which isn’t to say that’s a bad thing, and stars James McAvoy (Victor) and Daniel Radcliffe (Igor) definitely hold their own with some witty banter and action-adventure peril. There’s also a foreboding sense of horror creeping through, which mostly works, though it’s admittedly a bit jarring. If nothing else, the trailer looks fun and stylish and could be a solid winter distraction.

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star in a dynamic and thrilling twist on a legendary tale. Radical scientist Victor Frankenstein (McAvoy) and his equally brilliant protégé Igor Strausman (Radcliffe) share a noble vision of aiding humanity through their groundbreaking research into immortality. But Victor’s experiments go too far, and his obsession has horrifying consequences. Only Igor can bring his friend back from the brink of madness and save him from his monstrous creation.
