The season finale of The CW’s Flash brought the twists and turns, but as much as anything, it also set the tone for what’s to come in Season 5. So what does producer Todd Helbing have to say about all those lingering threads?
Arguably the biggest reveal was the identity of the Mystery Girl who has been lingering around much of the season. As many fans expected she’s the daughter of Barry and Iris, Nora West-Allen. She’s come back in time to find her young parents because she’s made some mysterious mistake. Helbing told Entertainment Weekly that reveal is “obviously all about next season.” He teased fans might also want to go back and rewatch Nora’s previous cameo appearances, which could have more meaning than first assumed.
“Barry certainly learned his lesson about time travel and the effects that it can have,” he said. “She comes back for a specific reason, not only to see her parents and meet everybody on the team, which you saw all throughout the season — there’s four specific times that she came back, and you’re gonna learn about why she chose those four times and how they’re gonna play into not only the mistake that she made, but the consequences for somebody like her, a speedster traveling from the future to the past, and what that means for Barry and the team.”
Even more, Helbing teased next season could start dolling out some mysteries in regards to what has actually changed 30 years in the future, and all the things Nora must know about the current team and where they end up in the intervening decades. It seems clear that Nora will be a main character next season, and her story will be the thrust
“She’s privy to information that nobody else is, so her experience in the future is certainly different than where everybody is now,” he said. “A lot of next season too, you’re gonna see this relationship between Barry and Iris and Nora, so we just wanted to give the audience a little glimmer into what her reaction is to everybody. If you go back and watch all of the ways that she interacted with everybody, you can get a nice little sense of what her relationship is with everybody in the future.”
Looking to the rest of the supporting cast, Helbing also teased a few more shake-ups on the way. Turns out it was always the plan to resurrect Dibny in the finale episode, and Helbing confirmed he’s back on Team Flash and will be “part of the next season.” He also confirmed we’ll be getting yet another new version of Harrison Wells, after Harry lost his intelligence (but finds his heart, so to speak) and decides to return home to Earth-2 and reconnect with his daughter. Helbing said they’ve already landed on a “fun and interesting new Wells to join the team.” Here’s hoping for cyborg Wells, or maybe Wells the Gray? Or playboy Wells? Well, whichever way they go, there are certainly options.
