It was a storyline that had been teased since the pilot episode, and the latter part of The Flash’s debut season finally gave us what we’d been waiting for — Gorilla Grodd in the flesh. So, how’d they pull that off on a TV budget?

A new visual effects sample reel from Encore VFX shows how they built Grodd in Episode 21, “Grodd Lives.” If you haven’t seen the episode, it’s one of the best of the series, and shows off some of the most impressive effects work in the show’s brief history. The video digs into the layering that went into creating a believable Grodd, and focuses on the interactions the digital beast had with the real-life cast. It’s impressive by any standards, but considering it’s on The CW series? Most impressive.

There’s a reason this episode was nominated for an Outstanding Special Visual Effects Emmy, and this showcases why it was so special. While we sit through the dog days of summer waiting for the fall season, this is a delightfully geeky distraction.
