March is Women's History Month. And while here on SYFY FANGRRLS we celebrate women's achievements throughout the year, we're going above and beyond for the upcoming month with a limited podcast series called Forgotten Women of Genre.
The silent film era is not well-known for being kind to its stars. Most of the people that founded the industry and built Hollywood from the ground up were unemployed and suffering from addiction by the time 1930 hit and the talkies took hold. But posthumously, many directors and actors have been mourned and given their due.
Lois Weber is one of those directors that did massive amounts of work only to see much of it forgotten within her lifetime. Using cinema as a tool to communicate greater moral meanings, her films were subsequently dismissed as didactic. Still, Weber was a huge deal in her day, and she created some early works of genre that still hold up surprisingly well by today's standards. What we're saying is, this is a career that deserves a second look.
Science fiction, fantasy, and all associated genres have finally evolved from a niche interest into a mainstream staple. But the women who have been instrumental in creating and shaping the nerdverse have largely gone unrecognized. Until today. Forgotten Women of Genre tells the stories of the women who helped some of the most famous fantasy worlds become a reality.
New episodes of this series will be released each day in the month of March, in addition to regularly scheduled episodes of STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS.
