Forgotten Women of Genre: Marie Severin

March is Women's History Month. And while here on SYFY FANGRRLS we celebrate women's achievements throughout the year, we're going above and beyond for the upcoming month with a limited podcast series called Forgotten Women of Genre.

In 2018, when Marie Severin passed away at the age of 89, many articles mourned the loss of an industry great. While given credit for her accomplishments as one of the few women creators of her day at Marvel, her work remains criminally underrated, and the hostility directed at women creators and audiences remains so often unaddressed by the comics industry at large.

Severin was one of the few comic professionals period that stayed working in the industry from the comic book bust of the early '50s all the way up to her later years with very few breaks. She co-created such fascinatingly weird concepts as Spider-Woman and the Living Tribunal, and she almost single-handedly headed up a line of children's comics with the Fraggle Rock and Muppet Babies series, based on the popular TV shows. She also just so happened to have colored a massive amount of Marvel's output before ultimately taking on the job of Art Director for the company. In short, this is a woman of many accomplishments, most of which have been forgotten to time, until now.

Science fiction, fantasy, and all associated genres have finally evolved from a niche interest into a mainstream staple. But the women who have been instrumental in creating and shaping the nerdverse have largely gone unrecognized. Until today. Forgotten Women of Genre tells the stories of the women who helped some of the most famous fantasy worlds become a reality.

New episodes of this series will be released each day in the month of March, in addition to regularly scheduled episodes of STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS.
