While Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones feature film adaptation failed to become a movie franchise, the television incarnation of Shadowhunters fared better on Freeform over the course of three seasons. However, the hunt is nearly over because Freeform has decided to cancel the series instead of ordering a fourth season.
There is some good news for fans of the show, though. While the second half of Shadowhunters Season 3 has already been filmed, Freeform has announced an additional two-episode pickup to give the series a true series finale. The downside is that the finale will only have two hours to adapt the sixth and final novel, while the entire third season will cover the events of the fourth and fifth books in The Mortal Instruments series.
At press time, the cast of Shadowhunters has yet to react to the cancellation on social media. Showrunner Todd Slavkin only posted a single tweet in which he expressed his shock and sadness about the news.
There’s already an outcry among Shadowhunters fans for another network or streaming service to rescue the series. But that seems like an unlikely outcome for this show. Even though a few series have been rescued by other outlets, it’s a rare occurrence. Considering that the already commissioned Shadowhunters series finale is meant to wrap up the show, it’s not clear where the series would go if it did continue.
Freeform has also announced that the second half of Season 3 will be called Shadowhunters: The Final Hunt. All 12 of the remaining episodes are expected to debut in Spring 2019.
