John Noble, who fans know from Fringe, Elementary, and Sleepy Hollow, is more than an intriguing face. Soon he’ll be an ominous voice. That’s because Noble will be playing the role of the villainous Mallus on The CW's Legends of Tomorrow.

Those who’ve been keeping up with the time travelers (or is that keeping back and forth?) will know that Mallus' acolytes seemingly have the ability to raise the dead, which means that Mallus himself must have even more tricks up his shadowy sleeve. So far Mallus hasn’t been seen, only mentioned. That’s currently part of his evil appeal.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim told Entertainment Weekly, “That’s the big mythology of the season, and what makes Mallus cool at this stage of everyone’s viewing experience is that right now he is just a name and is this whisper. You’ll learn more about him in [Episode] 305.”

So who is Mallus? The character hasn’t shown up in the pages of any DC Comics, but fans might recognize him anyway. Based on the robes of his acolyte, it seems Mallus could very well be the Time Trapper, a supervillain who has made enemies of good guys and bad guys alike. The Time Trapper can meddle with the past and future, which makes him one of the most powerful villains in all of villainy. In an opposing theory, Mallus may also be another name for Mordru, a sorcerer and foe of the Legion of Superheroes.

At this point, it's hard to say whether Legends is simply mining and combining other DC baddies or creating a wholly new character. Regardless, Noble will certainly bring some gravitas and menace to the role.

Or he could simply be a tailor-made opponent for the Legends. We’ll know more as time progresses. Or will it?
