The first full trailer from the new supernatural horror series Salem has arrived, setting the scene for one freaky witch hunt in the 1600s.
The series marks WGN America’s first foray into scripted programming, and follows the witch trials in Salem around 1692 — and it turns out it wasn’t all just based on paranoia. As the narrator puts it, the only thing worse than a witch hunt is an actual witch. Uh-oh.
Sci-fi veteran Brannon Braga (Star Trek, Flashforward) co-created the series, which stars Fringe alum Seth Gabel, Janet Montgomery (Human Target), Shane West (Nikita), Xander Berkeley (Being Human) and Ashley Madekwe as townsfolk trying to navigate the hysteria and legit evil lurking in the town.
Braga says the series won’t fall into the trappings of other supernatural series by adding in a ton of different baddies, noting that “there are no vampires or werewolves.” Instead, Braga says they’re focusing on more freaky, “grounded” types of magic. Judging by the blood and weirdness in this trailer, its easy to see that this is more akin to American Horror Story than Harry Potter.
