Open wide! Toy and collectible company Funko revealed today they’re introducing a line of Pop! Pez! dispensers featuring a variety of classic characters including Batman, Jack Skellington, Captain Crunch, Sonic the Hedgehog, and more.
The Batman Pez dispensers, set for release in September, and based on the 1966 Adam West show, may be the most popular item featured in Funko's announcement, but fans looking for something a bit more outside the box will have plenty to choose from as well. September also brings the release of painter Bob Ross, who even as the only non-fictional listing, is too cool to pass up (as Deadpool will attest).
October not only adds Cap'n Crunch to the mix, but also the Crunchberry Beast, Jean LaFoote, Quake, and Quisp, for those whose knowledge of Quaker cereals is vaster than most. Mega Man, who comes in three shads — blue, red, and green, will also be released that month alongside video game contemporaries, Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot.
And what would Pez be without Star Wars? Bossk and Greedo are also lined up for October and you can decide who dispenses first. But the prize of the Halloween season has to be The Nightmare Before Christmas set, featuring Jack, Sally, Vampire Scary Teddy, the Pumpking King, and Oogie Boogie, which are sure to provide sweet dreams.
While many of us could either take or leave the candy itself, the Pez dispensers have earned their place as prized possessions, with some of the rarer ones listed upwards of $100 on eBay. The popular candy dispensers have been collector’s items for decades, though their appeal seems to have diminished among younger fans in recent years. But leave it to the company that made bobble heads, vinyl figures, and even cereal must-own items again to give Pez sets new life and purpose at an affordable price.
Funko’s blog provides a sneak peek at the sets coming in the next few months. While most of the upcoming Pez dispensers feature retro characters, it seems like a safe bet that over the next few years we will be able to get our hands on dispensers featuring all of our favorite and latest properties (Game of Thrones Pez anyone?). The only question remaining is how much bobblehead shelf space can we sacrifice for our Pez dispensers?
