Back in May, cable network FXX (an offshoot of FX) announced it would be bringing the Merc With a Mouth to television as a 10-episode animated series set to air sometime in 2018.
Hailing from Community and Atlanta star Donald Glover and his brother Stephen Glover (Atlanta), the project also boasts Marvel Head of TV Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory as executive producers.
Being on the same network as Archer, you can bet your sweet @$$ the animated Deadpool series will be far more adult-oriented than Marvel’s Disney XD animated properties — such as their upcoming animated Marvel's Spider-Man series set to premiere in two weeks. Yes, Deadpool has shown up in animation before, but certainly not like this.
But with Deadpool already making a killing on the big screen with Ryan Reynolds as the titular character (Deadpool 2 is currently filming with Josh Brolin as Cable and Glover’s Atlanta co-star Zazie Beetz as Domino), how will FX’s Deadpool bring something new to the table?
During the Television Critics Association tour, FX head John Landgraf made it clear that their Deadpool series would be different from the movie version, saying “Deadpool will be really different from the movies. It has a different tone and editorial voice. [We] wanted to make something distinctly different from the movies.”
So how will it be different? Best guess is that it'll take more pages (no pun intended) from the comics, featuring some of the wacky visual gags you can't really pull off in live action. Regardless, we can't wait to see Glover (who is no stranger to Marvel, by the way, having voiced Miles Morales in the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series, and starring as Miles’ uncle Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming) put his own spin on Deadpool to create a series worthy of the fourth-wall-breaking Merc With a Mouth.
