We don't know much about what Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are planning for their upcoming excursion into the Star Wars universe, but one of the stars of both franchises is excited to see what they come up with.
Speaking with Variety while making the press rounds for her role as Qi'ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Emilia Clarke -- who recently completed her final scenes as Daenerys Targaryen in the soon-to-be-ending HBO fantasy series -- was asked what she thought Benioff and Weiss, with whom she's worked now for seven years, would bring to the Star Wars canon:
"What they brought to fantasy as a genre that people are like, appreciating on a much grander scale, putting all of that creativity and all of that skill and intellect into something that already has so much, I think it's just gonna be like Star Wars on acid. I think it'll be amazing. I can't wait."
The "Star Wars on acid" line is what naturally jumps out, and with the Skywalker saga coming to an end (for now, anyway) with Episode IX, it's intriguing to wonder whether Benioff and Weiss will bring a more adult, rougher-edged sensibility and narrative style to the all-new trilogy they've been commissioned to develop -- like they did with the sophisticated Game of Thrones.
The pair are slated to begin work on their Star Wars project as soon as Game of Thrones finishes up next year, while The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on a second, separate trilogy as well. As for what is expected of Benioff and Weiss, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy said that they will "break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Assuming that doesn't get them fired, that is. Where do you think the Game of Thrones duo will take their corner of the franchise? And does "Star Wars on acid" sound enticing to you?
