The producers of HBO’s Game of Thrones are digging deeper and deeper into George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire canon, and now they’re ready to introduce at least one dangerous daughter of Oberyn Martell.
The New Zealand Herald is reporting 24-year-old Kiwi actress Keisha Castle-Hughes (Whale Rider) has been cast as a Sand Snake in the upcoming fifth season of Thrones, where she’ll play a (yet unidentified) daughter of Oberyn Martell.
There are several of Oberyn’s daughters mentioned in Martin’s books, but the show will reportedly be focused on just three of them: Obara, Nymeria, and Tyene. In the wake of Oberyn’s death, his daughters are out for revenge in a major way, pushing their uncle, Prince Doran Martell, into a war with King’s Landing.
So who, exactly, is Castle-Hughes playing? We don’t know yet, though the best guess is Nymeria or Obara. The Herald has their money on the dark-skinned Nymeria, while Vanity Fair is speculating she’ll play the ass-kicking Obara. Either way, it should make for some fun drama next year.
What do you think? Will the young actress make a good addition to the world of Westeros?
