HBO is making room for more Game of Thrones. Next season, the fantasy drama will be chock-full of extended episodes. That means longer run times and more material from the books!
Writers and producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss are giving you more bang for your buck. Season three will have episodes that expand from 52 to 56 or 57 minutes.
"There's almost another full episode's worth of extra minutes spread across the season," Weiss says. "One of the great liberties with HBO is we're not forced to come in at a specific time. We can't be under 50 minutes or over 60, but that gives us a lot of flexibility."
Since they're tackling George R.R. Martin's A Storm of Swords, the additional time is crucial. Season three consists of 10 episodes, but some will be more action-packed than others. For example, the finale could run well over an hour.
According to HBO "All 10 episodes gained a minute or two from past seasons with the finale very possibly exceeding 60 minutes." They've already done so in the past with the pilot and season two's finale.
Game of Thrones premieres March 31.
