Lani Sarem has been working in the entertainment industry for years as a music manager for bands such as Plain White Ts, Blues Traveler, and 100 Monkeys. She’s also had small, uncredited roles as an actress in films such as Jason Bourne, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, and Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Now Sarem is adding another item to her resume: author. She’s launching her debut novel, Handbook for Mortals, with GeekNation, a geek pop culture website founded in 2012.

Handbook for Mortals is a fantasy series starring a young woman named Zade who has magical powers. She decides to leave her hometown in Tennessee to escape the overbearing clutches of her mother, Dela, and ends up in Las Vegas. There she uses her powers to score a role in a magic stage show, where she simultaneously falls for the show’s director and also the leader of the band. But when Zade is injured on stage, she’ll have to draw on her powers in order to save herself.

The novel is the first in a planned series being published by GeekNation, to begin releasing on August 15 in hardcover and ebook. This is the first book that GeekNation has published. The site also plans to turn the book into a film franchise, with Thomas Ian Nicholas (of American Pie fame) on board to produce. He may also have a role in the movie.

As Nicholas explained to The Hollywood Reporter, "This story is very important to me considering that my great uncle was the famous close-up magician John Scarne and I was born in Las Vegas." Sarem will co-produce, along with Chris Kenner.
