Every year the GLAAD Media Awards celebrate LGBTQ+ representation throughout pop culture. Last week, they announced this year’s nominees which include many familiar genre names and faces across comics, TV, film, music, and video games.
Deadpool 2 picked up a nomination for Outstanding Film: Wide Release and our fave Janelle Monáe picked up a nomination for Outstanding Music Artist for Dirty Computer. But genre's biggest presence might be in the television categories, with Black Lightning, Handmaid’s Tale, Shadowhunters, Supergirl, and Wynonna Earp all grabbing Outstanding Drama Series nominations. Plus American Horror Story: Apocalypse and Sense8 picked up nominations for Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series and our fave She-Ra is up for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming.
Over in comics, nominees include Batwoman and Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles from DC and Marvel's Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Runaways, and Iceman. BOOM! Studios' Fence and Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass also made the list of nominees. Rounding out the Outstanding Comic Book category is Bingo Love from Image Comics, Oh S#!t It's Kim & Kim from Black Mask Comics, and Strangers in Paradise XXV from Abstract Studio.
The category for Outstanding Video Game is a new addition to this year's awards with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset, Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, and The Sims Mobile all receiving nominations.
As we continue to push for more LGBTQ+ representation across all platforms, it's important to highlight and support the media who are already doing their part to accurately depict the diversity of our world.
The Awards will be given out during two events in New York (May 4) and Los Angeles (March 28) later this year. You can see the full list of nominees for the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards on the GLAAD website.
