We might still have a few weeks left to wait for The Walking Dead, but the other cable zombie series (no, not Fear the Walking Dead) returns this weekend — and the new season of Z Nation will apparently include one heck of a meta cameo.

Entertainment Weekly has a first-look at George R.R. Martin’s guest role in Season 2 of Syfy’s Z Nation, in which the author will play an undead version of himself still working to wrap up his A Song of Ice and Fire saga. Take heart, Game of Thrones fans: It’s nice to know that even if the zombie apocalypse hits, we’ll still get the ending we’ve been promised.

Martin will even be showing off a “new” book in the Syfy (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed.) series, dubbed A Promise of Spring, which is a play on the name of the expected seventh volume in his massive world, A Dream of Spring. For those keeping count, the still-alive Martin is currently penning the sixth book in the series. Martin joked he signed on for the cameo to “prove to [his] fans” that no matter what, these books will be finished. Well played.

The author will make his Z Nation debut in the eighth episode of the new season, where he has been imprisoned by a character called the Collector who captures celebrity zombies for nefarious purposes. That’s just the type of plot that will fit perfectly in the bizzaro apocalpyse of Z Nation.

Check out some pics of zombie George above and below, and let us know what you think. The second season of Z Nation premieres this Friday.
