2016 is gearing up to be an amazing year TV-wise with the premiere of several sci-fi, horror and fantasy shows coming upon us. One such is Esquire Network’s second scripted series ever, Beowulf.
The fantasy series is a reimagining of the Anglo-Saxon epic poem, written between the 8th and 11th centuries, that will not only feature original characters from the Old English text but also brand-new characters and storylines. An ITV production (it began airing in the UK last week), the 13-episode series is written by James Dormer, Tim Haines and Katie Newman.
Ahead of its North American premiere, Esquire has debuted a new BTS video featuring interviews with three of the main cast — Kieran Bew (Da Vinci’s Demons), Ed Speleers (Eragon) and Laura Donnelly (Outlander) — as well as a look at some footage from the fantasy show. Check it out:
Based on the complex protagonist of a classic poem written between the eighth and tenth century, Beowulf takes place in a mythological place, The Shieldlands, and challenges the notions of good and evil, heroes and villains, and the rule of law against one’s moral code. The drama stars Kieran Bew (DA VINCI’S DEMONS), in the lead role Beowulf; multi-award-winning actor William Hurt (DAMAGES); acclaimed actress Joanne Whalley (WOLF HALL); Ed Speleers (DOWNTON ABBEY) and David Ajala (BLACK BOX).
Also starring Alex Price, David Bradley, David Harewood and William Hurt, Beowulf will premiere on Jan. 23. Will you be tuning in?
