While the search for a director for Sony’s planned Ghostbusters 3 flick may soon be at an end, now comes word that it'll be a reboot. With ladies.
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Paul Feig -- director of Bridesmaids and The Heat -- is the frontrunner to take on the long-gestating project. No formal negotiations have taken place, so nothing is official yet, but he is apparently the studio’s first choice.
Over at Variety, some inside sources have revealed that the third entry in the Ghostbusters franchise will get the dreaded reboot treatment and will be focusing on female Ghostbusters, to be played by comedic actresses. The script will be rewritten from scratch.
Ghostbusters 3 was to be helmed by Ivan Reitman, who directed both the 1984 original and 1989’s inferior Ghostbusters II. However, Reitman exited the project on March 18.
The Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were brought on board in 2008 to pen the script and revive the franchise, while Men in Black 3 writer Etan Cohen was brought into the fold in 2012 to redraft Ghostbusters 3. The script was revised following the death of Harold Ramis on Feb. 18.
So, who you guys gonna call?
