Denizens of Riverdale unite! The hit CW show came to New York Comic Con Sunday with more sweet goodness than even the Blossom Maple Farms could process. The panel brought together showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, K.J. Apa (Archie), Lili Reinhart (Betty), Luke Perry (Fred), and Madchen Amick (Alice) to divulge some of the surprises fans can expect heading into the season.
The panel kicked off by showing audiences the first act of the Season 3 premiere, which features Archie on trial after being falsely accused of murder by Big Bad, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos). Molly Ringwald returns as Archie's mom and serves as his defense in the premiere. But in true Riverdale fashion, the verdict will have to wait as the judge gives Archie a Labor Day weekend freebie while the jury deliberates. Expect Archie to make the most out that weekend, especially when it comes to girlfriend Veronica (Camila Mendes).
After the footage, Aguirre-Sacasa and the cast revealed that Jughead's (Cole Sprouse) sister Jellybean and mom Gladys will finally be introduced this season, and will be played by newcomer Trinity Likins and legend Gina Gershon, respectively.
Other tidbits for the season include the previously announced flashback episode (which features the younger cast taking on the roles of their parents when they were in high school), Episode 4, the Halloween episode. But because this is Riverdale, expect the spookiness to live on long past October.
Season 3 will also delve into Cheryl’s (Madelaine Petsch) transition into Serpenthood and the mystery behind where she got her serpent tattoo. We’re guessing it won’t be anyplace good. There’s also the issue of the cult that has cropped up in Riverdale thanks to Betty’s sister Polly (Tiera Skovbye). Her mother, Alice, has no problem joining the ranks as she also hooks up with a new love interest, New Age guru *ahem* cult leader Edgar Evernever. Edgar’s daughter Evelyn will befriend Betty this season. Could a reemergence of Dark Betty be far behind?
While the cult, Hiram Lodge, Archie’s trial, and the mysterious Gargoyle King are sure to keep things in Riverdale dark this season, the creator and cast hinted at some downtime for the characters as well, particularly some much-needed bonding time for Archie and Jughead. How long can that last?
