Prepare to ask yourself “where in the world is Gina Rodriguez?” pretty soon. The Jane the Virgin and Annihilation star has officially been tapped to star in Netflix's upcoming film adapting the popular series of Carmen Sandiego children’s games.
According to Deadline, Rodriguez is producing the film as part of her newly launched company, I Can and I Will, and is teaming up with producers Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser of Misher Films. This live-action adaptation is a continuation of Netflix’s work with the Carmen Sandiego brand. Rodriguez is also signed on to voice the character in the upcoming Netflix animated series debuting next year.
Carmen Sandiego initially debuted in 1985 in Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, a computer game published by Broderbund. The series of games (and later books, comics, and even a television game show) centered on the search for Carmen Sandiego, leader of the criminal organization V.I.L.E. Players would take on the role of investigators with the ACME Detective Agency, hunting down the career thief and her compatriots across the globe based only on clues involving trivia from history and geography.
The games became popular in classrooms as a means of teaching kids history and geography and problem-solving skills, and Carmen appeared in more than a dozen games, teaching everything from world and US history to math and astronomy.
The character has touched the lives of countless millennials and become an important cultural milestone for nerdy girls of all types. It’s no surprise that Rodriguez would choose to bring this character to the screen for a new generation of girls (and boys) to enjoy.
