The G.I. Joe franchise has been kicking around in different comic runs for decades, and now IDW is getting ready to give it another shot. Go, Joe!
Everyone from Marvel to Dark Horse has taken a crack at the Real American Heroes over the years, and IDW is the latest company to team up with Hasbro, having snagged the license back in 2008. In an effort to breathe some new life into the franchise, they’ve brought in a new writer and are prepping a full-fledged relaunch.
The company has tapped Gears of War and Halo novelist Karen Traviss as head writer, along with returning G.I. Joe artist Steve Kurth to launch a new female-led version of the team. The first issue hits in September. According to the solicitation, it’ll focus on a broken version of the team barely clinging to relevancy.
Here’s an excerpt:
Does the world need GI Joe? Cobra had become an international peacekeeping force... and the future of GI Joe looks bleak. Scarlett leads what's left of America's ultimate fighting force - but will she be able to keep the team together? Real-world action and politics collide... and nothing will be the same.
This is a unique approach, and we’re really curious to see what Traviss does with the pitch. This’ll definitely be one to keep an eye on later this year.
