Tris and her rebel friends are back in the first trailer for The Divergent Series: Allegiant.
While the first two films in this franchise, Divergent and Insurgent, took place within the walled confines of a post-apocalyptic Chicago, the new film will take the characters beyond the city's walls for the first time.
What they find is not pretty, as the landscape outside the former Windy City is a devastated wasteland. But something else apparently lies outside those walls too, and whatever is out there is apparently a threat to the survival of humanity -- or at least that's what it says in the official synopsis (I assume fans of the books know what it is).
And then there's Jeff Daniels as a new character named David who may be an even bigger menace than Kate Winslet was in the first two films.
I've never quite known what to make of the Divergent movies -- they mostly seem like a pale imitation of The Hunger Games, with a few other films or books thrown in, and although they're far from blockbusters, they've done well enough that the third and final book is being split into two movies (the last film, Ascendant, will be out in 2017).
Shailene Woodley is back as Tris, along with Theo James as Four plus returning cast members Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Naomi Watts and Maggie Q. The Divergent Series: Allegiant is out on March 18, 2016. The trailer and official synopsis are below. Have you spent any time with this series, and will you see it through to the end?
After the earth-shattering revelations of Insurgent, Tris must escape with Four and go beyond the wall enclosing Chicago. For the first time ever, they will leave the only city and family they have ever known in order to find a peaceful solution for their embroiled city. Once outside, old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless with the revelation of shocking new truths. Tris and Four must quickly decide who they can trust as a ruthless battle ignites beyond the walls of Chicago which threatens all of humanity. In order to survive, Tris will be forced to make impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice and love.
